Every material has an environmental impact. We make conscious choices, from a steel frame to Dutch sheep's wool.
The impact of premium materials
"You make a sustainable sofa, why isn't the frame made of wood?" It's a question we get often. Wood is a renewable resource, can be sourced locally, and can last for generations. Yet we chose steel.
Every material has a certain environmental impact. CO₂ emissions are one factor, but also water usage, pollution, and the depletion of fossil resources. Expected lifespan also plays a major role. All considerations we take into account when choosing our materials.
A steel frame: sustainable and modular
Our calculations, verified with experts, showed that the total environmental impact of a wooden frame and a steel frame is virtually equal. What is not equal are the cost and the potential for modular options, both favour steel.
To keep the Kairos sofa affordable and as versatile as possible, we chose a steel frame.
Dutch sheep's wool: local and natural
We fill our back cushions with 100% Dutch sheep's wool. An estimated 1.5 million kilos of Dutch wool a year go to landfill or the incinerator. [1] Because this wool isn't soft enough for clothing, it's currently treated as a waste product.
For cushion filling, it's a fantastic alternative to synthetic materials. It's resilient, moisture-regulating, air-purifying, more sustainable, recyclable, and completely natural. We deliberately choose coloured wool, which is discarded even more easily than white wool.
Fabrics: consciously chosen for comfort and the environment
Our fabrics lead the way in sustainability. From the Facet, made of 75% recycled wool with a Martindale rating of 100,000, [2] to the Avon, made of 100% recycled PET bottles. [3]
For both fabrics, a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is available, making their environmental impact measurable. We're constantly searching for the best fabrics for both user and world.
