Circular program: a new home for your Kairos

The Dutch buy 90 million kilos of seating furniture annually. Most of it is incinerated once it is thrown out. We do things differently.

Circular program: a new home for your Kairos

A new home for your Kairos

The Dutch buy roughly 90 million kilos of new sofas and armchairs every year. [1] Most of what is thrown out [some 80 million kilos a year] leaves via the municipal waste yard with the coarse household residual waste, and is then incinerated. Of the materials that come back out, essentially only the metal is recovered; about a tenth of the wood is recycled and the rest goes into the furnace. [1]

Despite Kairos building sofas from the finest materials with the option to maintain and repair every component, eventually you'll say goodbye to your Kairos sofa. We do everything we can to prevent it from ending up in the incinerator.

Kairos circular program

Materials passport: transparency for a second life

Every Kairos piece of furniture comes with a QR code linked to a materials passport. By scanning the code, we provide insight into the age and materials used in the sofa.

When you decide to sell your sofa, you can share detailed specifications. We also share information on how the next owner can purchase new covers or spare parts, so your sofa starts its second life looking fresh.

Kairos buys back your sofa: deposit for furniture

If you can't find a new owner for your sofa, we'll gladly buy it back. We do this for a modest amount, comparable to the deposit on bottles and cans, depending on the condition of the sofa.

We do this because no one knows the value of even the most well-loved Kairos pieces better than us, and because this is a crucial step in a circular chain.

Kairos buy-back program

Life after buy-back: circular down to every component

Furniture that returns to Kairos is assessed per component for reusability. A frame with surface scratches gets recoated and reused. The wool filling is re-picked and washed.

Worn-out upholstery is recycled and can serve as raw material for a new textile product. For every component, we seek the highest-quality form of reuse.
